About the novel: Charles is a grad-school dropout whose life and marriage are at an impasse, but a chance encounter will cause him to re-evaluate the choices he has made. Chris R. E. Wells' haunting debut novel chronicles the life of a man whose story is at once foreign and all-too-familiar as it meditates on the nature of memory, fantasy, love, and samaritanism.

The inaugural issue of grain short/grain long is now available, featuring excellent work by Suzanne Grazyna, Virginia Reeves, Elizabeth Kate Switaj, & C. R. E. Wells in response to the theme "grain short/grain long."

Our next issue will center around the theme "Collaboration / Stimulus / Response." We are looking for works that collaborate with, are stimulated by, &/or respond to other writers & artists. The vehicle—be it ekphrasis, tag-team writing, plain ol' inspiration, etc.—is immaterial. We want to see what you come up with. This is a broad topic, so we hope to get a variety of interpretations.

grain short/grain long is open to all types of poetry, prose, visual, & hybrid works. We are especially interested in submissions from women; Southerners; unknown, unpublished, & under-represented artists; or anyone whose projects have been described as "innovative," "experimental," "avant-garde," "post-avant," "eccentric," or just plain "odd."

Potential contributors may submit up to four (4) poems, four thousand (4,000) words of prose, or images up to 2 MB in response to the current call to flaming [dot] giblet [at] gmail [dot] com. (Of course, replace the bracketed words with the appropriate symbols.)

Accepted file formats include JPG, TIFF, BMP, ODT, DOC, & RTF. Other formats will be considered on an individual basis—query first. Projects that stretch the limits of print are welcome, so long as their execution is feasible within our (alas, oh so limited) resources. Hint: Make it great. The more we love it, the more likely we are to finesse something for you.

Submissions in response to "Collaboration / Stimulus / Response" will be accepted until December 31, 2008.

Update on White Kitty

As you've probably guessed, C. R. E. Wells' White Kitty is way behind schedule. Also, due to lack of funding and (wo)manpower, we will not be able to offer it in a handbound edition. After some discussion, the author and press have decided to publish it via a print-on-demand service.

To get catch everyone up on the details, the first set of proofs are complete. We are in the process of correcting them and prepping it for printing. With grain short/grain long up for the summer—along with a month-long sojourn to France—we are pushing the publication date back to Fall/Winter 2008.

Pre-orders will likely be announced sometime in late summer.

Submissions call for upcoming magazine/anthology!

Flaming Giblet Press, in conjunction with Sundress Publications, is pleased to announce Grain Short/Grain Long, a one-shot magazine/anthology project set to be released Summer 2008.

Grain short, as defined by Etherington & Roberts's Bookbinding and the Conservation of Books: A Dictionary of Descriptive Terminology, is "a term sometimes used in paper manufacture to indicate that the grain or machine direction of the paper is parallel to the shorter dimension of the sheet." Conversely, grain long refers to grain or machine direction that is parallel to the larger dimension.

We welcome poetry, prose, hybrid, & visual submissions that respond to these terms/definitions. Feel free to interpret the theme as freely—or literally—as you'd like. We are not looking for work that subscribes to a particular "school" or "aesthetic"; any work, so long as it's good, will be considered & read with relish. Submissions by under-represented & unknown writers/artists encouraged. (For more on our so-called "biases," please view Flaming Giblet's press information or review the many publications under the Sundress umbrella.)

Grain Short/Grain Long will be released as an online gallery &/or free PDF. All work selected will also be considered for a limited-edition "book" project to be distributed by both presses.

Flaming Giblet Press is excited to announce its second publication: White Kitty, a novel by Christopher Wells.

White Kitty is set to be released January 2008 in a limited, handbound edition. Pre-orders will be available in November.

Ladies & gentlemen, it is going to be a gorgeous book—in both execution & content. Those familiar with Christopher's work know how wonderful it is. We can't even begin to express how honored we are to have the opportunity to publish his first novel.

Okay, so our big plans for Small Press Month fell through due to lack of funds. (Can you blame us for going a little crazy at our fellow small presses' tables? We picked up some fine stuff in Atlanta.)

However, we have three (!) big projects coming up. We're going to start work on them in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

Francis Bacon coined the phrase instantia crucis—"crucial instance"—to refer to the moment in an experiment when one of two hypotheses is proved, & the other is disproved. Bacon's phrase was based on the Latin word crux, which originally meant "cross" but had come to refer to a guidepost at the point where roads separate. Today, crucial refers to something important or can be used as an adjective to indicate approval.

Flaming Giblet Press seeks to publish works by writers & artists that push the boundaries of crucial. We're open to all types of prose, poetry, visual art, & hybrid texts, but we prefer works that tap into & transform the essential. Works that stand at crossroads & point in all directions.

We enjoy working closely with writers & artists to create aesthetically pleasing objects that best represent their visions. We're especially interested in works by women, Southerners, & anyone whose projects have been described as innovative, experimental, avant-garde, post-avant, eccentric, &/or just plain wacky. Projects that stretch the limits of "print" are welcome, so long as they are feasible—within our (sadly limited) resources.
